Athenian & Spartan League Centurions
Is there anyone out there who knows the whereabouts of the family and friends of the following players who made a century or more appearances for us between 1963 and 1974 when we joined the Isthmian League? (See previous request re Surrey Senior League players). Please note that this list includes most of those whose careers transcended all three leagues until the club came of age. And are there any head and shoulder pictures of them in their playing days (ideally wearing our colours)?

Roger Agar (1968-1973) – 149 appearances and 7 goals
Joined from local rivals Carshalton Athletic during Dick Foss’s final season and became the regular centre half for a number of seasons. Played in the relegation season but when Jimmy Rose joined, he was clearly impressed enough to retain him during those promotion winning seasons and did ell enough to get selected for an FA XI representative fixture. Left at the end of the 1972 season and returned a year later for a short period.
Alan Brazier (1960-1965) – 162 appearances and 16 goals
A wing half who had the ability for a trail at Football League level but wasn’t given the opportunity – moved to Leatherhead where he played Athenian League Premier Division football for a number of seasons.
Frank Childs (1965-1974) – 143 ( plus 2 as sub) appearances and 13 goals
Appeared to enjoy the occasional change of scenery as his career with us was interspersed with spells at Dorking (and maybe other clubs). Primarily a half back who occasionally played elsewhere.
Tony Day (1964-1972) – 223 (plus 8 as sub) appearances and 80 goals
Good enough to win County FA honours with London and Surrey plus selection for the Athenian League’s representative fixture Divisions One and Two v Premier Division. I recall he liked the ‘occasional’ fag and played for the club until the second season of Jimmy Rose’s spell. Had a good turn of pace over short distances. I think he worked down the brickyard for a spell.
Dennis Harkness (1960-1967) – 176 appearances and 139 goals
Possibly joined from the Chelsea youth set up, apparently had a hatred of training so much so that he gave up football for a while to concentrate on athletics! A very good goalscorer who formed a tremendous partnership with Tony Day, departed after the end of the 1966-67 season, possibly to the Suffolk area.
Peter Henderson (1964-1969) – 164 appearances
Full back who joined from Selhurst Park (I believe that this may have been a Palace junior team) in the Surrey Senior League days, a stalwart in those heady days from 1962-68, I think he suffered an injury around 1968 and wasn’t the same player after that time, bowing out early in the relegation season of 1969-70. Lived near Sidcup if memory serves.
Arthur Hillier (1957-1970) - 119 (plus 1 as sub) appearances and 30 goals
I am glad that Arthur made this list – he was never the greatest player to wear the shirt but one that every club needs, the archetypal club man who is always available to help out whenever and wherever both on and off the field. He started off in the mid-fifties and was around well probably until the relegation season.
Micky Lloyd (1964-1970) – 192 (plus 3 as sub) appearances and 23 goals
Half back –a tremendously fit player whose time with the club was interspersed with spells at other clubs including Leatherhead. Died tragically early through motor-neurone disease.
Tony Luckett (1962-1973) – 327 (plus 1 as sub) appearances and 55 goals
A former Selhurst Park player, I believe that Tony first went to Carshalton before joining us. I recall his mother and brother being regular travellers on the coach to away fixtures. Played in three leagues for us – a back injury eventually putting paid to his career when we reached the Premier Division. Played up front during the Spartan League season when, according to one former player “he just couldn’t stop scoring”. 46 goals is testament to that statement. Did play up front in the Athenian when the occasion demanded it but was primarily a half or full back after that.
Norman Stanley (1964-1972) – 184 appearances
A massive presence between the sticks for a number of seasons, he left in February 1968 having been persuaded to join Tooting & Mitcham (he had played against them in the Amateur Cup earlier that season). His performances were such that he was called up to the Amateur International squad although I don’t believe that he actually played. Rejoined during Jimmy Rose’s first season but only played a few games having been injured at work (?fell down a lift shaft).
Alan Young (1967-1972) – 136 (plus 3 as sub) appearances and 50 goals Signed up from Erith & Belvedere as did a number of players at that time – I remember him firstly for the goal (plus one disallowed) against Walthamstow Avenue and his syrup. Possessed a tremendous shot – his dad Bill was also involved, running the reserve team for a number of seasons.
